Went out for full day. Despite the day starting off slow, action picked up quickly and consistently for afternoon. 5 total bluefin hooked, unfortunately lost one to an aggressive Sea lion. Great time with Capt. Frank and John, they got us on the fish! We'll see you guys again.

We had a great time out with Captain Frank and George. Didn't catch much, but nobody else on radio did either so it was just a slow day. Frank was energetic and excited every time we had a shot at some fish, which made it fun even when we struck out. He went the extra mile, drove something like 90 nautical miles, and let us stay out an extra hour in search of a catch, which paid off when we did finally bring something in.Highlight of the trip was getting a hook on a marlin that one of our group members was able to reel in for a bit before it broke the line. Would 100% use Frank again next time we go fishing!

Went out on a 12hr trip and had a blast! My experience was largely in fresh water fishing and Frank and Jorge were incredibly patient in teaching me the ropes. Looking forward to the next time I can get out there on the Ironclad!

Frank and his crew were great! We had an amazing day of fishing! We hit yellowtail like crazy. Frank and his crew were super helpful to our whole group including extra help to our kids. The food and snacks on board were plentiful and delicious. The boat was great and had everything we needed for our day trip. It was a 5-star experience.

I have been out with Ironclad Sportfishing three times now. All day trips, 1 to San Clemente, 1 off shore, and 1 Coronado Islands trip. Sometimes we hit, sometimes not but that’s fishing. Capt Frank knows how to find the fish, he doesn’t grind it out rather he actively hunts to find the action. The boat has plenty of space for everyone to fish off the stern if needed but also has ample space on the bow for throwing irons or fighting monsters. You can’t go wrong with this company, if you need a spot filled, hit me up. 😂🤷‍♂️

Went out with Frank on a 3/4 day and had a great time. Super knowledgeable and cool captain. Took us out to some good spots and got plenty of fish. Great value especially considering he had rods, bait, and made us breakfast and lunch. Will definitely be going out with him again soon. 11/10 would recommend. Awesome experience!

Fish Species in the Coronado Islands

The waters around the Coronado Islands are home to numerous fish species.
Here’s more detailed information about some of the most sought-after catches:
Yellowfin tuna are known for their speed and endurance. These torpedo-shaped fish can grow up to 400 pounds, though most catches are in the 30-80 pound range. Their yellow fins and sickle-shaped tails characterize them. Yellowfin is often found in the deeper waters around the islands, typically in schools. They’re known for their long, powerful runs and are often caught by trolling with lures or live bait fishing.
Bluefin tuna are prized for their size and the quality of their meat. They can grow to over 1,000 pounds, though most catches in the Coronado Islands area are smaller. Bluefin are dark blue on top with silvery sides and have short pectoral fins. They’re powerful swimmers and can dive to great depths. Fishing for bluefin often involves trolling, kite fishing, or chunking techniques.
Yellowtail, also known as California yellowtail or amberjack, are strong fighters that provide an excellent angling experience. They typically range from 10 to 40 pounds and are easily identified by their yellow tail and a yellow stripe along their side. Yellowtail are often found near kelp beds and rocky structures around the islands. Popular fishing methods include live bait fishing, yo-yo iron jigging, and surface iron casting.
Calico bass, also called kelp bass, are popular targets for both novice and experienced anglers. They typically weigh 1 to 5 pounds, with larger specimens reaching up to 12 pounds. Their mottled brown and orange coloration provides excellent camouflage in kelp forests. Calico bass inhabit the kelp forests and rocky reefs around the Coronado Islands. They’re often caught using plastic swimbaits, live bait, or fly fishing.
Various rockfish species can be found in the waters surrounding the Coronado Islands. Common varieties include vermilion rockfish, bocaccio, and cow cod. These bottom-dwelling fish come in various colors and can weigh up to 10 pounds or more. They’re typically found near rocky structures and are often caught using bottom fishing techniques with cut bait or artificial lures.
Lingcod are aggressive predators found near rocky structures and reefs. They can grow to substantial sizes, with some specimens exceeding 50 pounds. Lingcod has a large mouth with sharp teeth and a mottled gray-green coloration. They’re often caught using large jigs, live bait, or trolling near the bottom. Lingcod is known for its solid fights and delicious white, flaky meat.
California halibut are flatfish found on sandy bottoms around the islands. They can grow up to 60 pounds, though most catches are in the 10-30 pound range. Halibut are masters of camouflage, changing color to match their surroundings. They’re often caught by drift fishing with live bait or by trolling close to the bottom. Halibut are prized for their mild, sweet flavor and firm texture.
